I hadn’t needed to extract much else than zip files so never needed a utility like this until today where I needed to extract a.rar file someone sent me. I remembered the name Stuffit from back in the day and go figure, they’re still around with a version 16 product. I gave it a try and it fails to do the one thing I downloaded this program for. It said there was something wrong with the.rar file and couldn’t open it.

Can’t re-download, because the App store page only shows option to “open.” So, I have the latest version, but my Mac can’t find it. I’m thinking I’ll have to do a manual uninstall, which is a time-consuming pain, in order to do a clean re-install. When Suffit works, it’s fine. When the install works, it’s fine. Just click on the 'plus' button on the right and choose a destination type, an archive type, with or without encryption, and if you want to be notified when the action is complete you can also choose a notification option.
Tried to move the new version from the folder into the Applications folder. Got message “You do not have suffiecient permissions to move this file.) So who does? I’m the admin, and it didn’t ask for the password. So, it didn’t move the new version, but apparently it did delete the old version. The old version is completely gone, not in the Trash or anywhere.
It should run fine under.

What is StuffIt Deluxe 1.5.x - 8.x? StuffIt was the most versatile and used compression suite on the Mac since 1987. It began as shareware and then it went commercial but StuffIt Expander (the decompression tool) always remained free and was even bundled by Apple on Mac OS release CD-ROM's starting from the mid-90's, coinciding with the popularity of the internet in homes. It became so much of an essential tool when downloading basically *anything* from the internet. Macintosh applications (and most documents) all contain resource forks which are not binary safe nor transfered using standard FTP or HTTP tools such as web browsers. Therefore, StuffIt took care of bundling resource forks along with the binary data constituting the file and allowed for uploading/downloading from or to a web server.
